The Agricultural Leadership Development (ALD) Program is a fully immersive, six-week, hands-on learning experience designed for emerging and established food system leaders. Participants are selected through a competitive application process and engage in intensive agricultural training, leadership development, and real-world business education that strengthens and sustains local and regional food systems.

This program equips individuals with the practical skills, strategic knowledge, and cultural grounding needed to build durable, profitable, and regenerative agricultural enterprises. Through experiential learning, mentorship, and applied practice, participants gain the tools necessary to become resilient producers, land stewards, and community leaders.

Rooted in lived experience, intergenerational knowledge, and place-based practice, Sunrider Ranch believes the deepest lessons in agriculture cannot be confined to four walls. True wisdom lives in the soil, the seasons, the animals, and the people who steward them. This philosophy is the foundation of our Live Experience Learning Model — immersive programs that teach participants by doing.

Learning Approach: Live Experience Learning

ALD participants engage directly in real agricultural operations and leadership environments. Learning is grounded in hands-on practice, critical thinking, and mentorship from established food system leaders.

Participants receive training in:

  • Regenerative & climate-resilient crop production

  • Soil health & land stewardship

  • Livestock handling, pasture management & movement (including horseback work)

  • Infrastructure planning & farm systems design

Through direct participation, learners understand not only how agriculture functions, but why every decision matters, building confidence, competence, and leadership capacity.

Immersion Experience

Participants live onsite at Sunrider Ranch in thoughtfully designed rustic accommodations that support both comfort and deep connection to land.

Housing Includes:

  • A-Frame Glamping Pods – Single & Double occupancy cabins for rest, reflection, and study

  • 11x24 Bathhouse Facilities – Modern 4 stall shower, toilet and sink. bathhouses designed for comfort and functionality

    The ALD Program operates in seasonal learning terms, allowing participants to experience the full agricultural cycle and gain diverse skill sets across climate conditions.

    Each six-week cohort focuses on season-specific skills, operational priorities, and leadership development, ensuring a comprehensive and well-rounded learning experience.

  • The ALD Program is designed for emerging and established farmers, ranchers, food system professionals, Indigenous producers, land stewards, and community leaders who are committed to building resilient, regenerative, and economically sustainable food systems. Applicants may include career-changers, beginning farmers, farm workers, tribal food system leaders, and nonprofit or cooperative staff seeking advanced agricultural and leadership training. No formal degree is required — we value lived experience, commitment, and passion for land stewardship.

  • Yes. Participants take part in four full-day off-site immersive learning tours each term. These experiences may include visits to regenerative cattle operations, maple syrup producers, tribal fisheries, shellfish harvesting sites, and innovative farms or food businesses. These tours expose participants to diverse agricultural models, regional food systems, and economic pathways while expanding professional networks and real-world understanding.

  • Yes. Sunrider Ranch offers Special Enrollment (Limited-Term Participation) options on a case-by-case basis for individuals who are unable to commit to the full six-week residential program.

    This pathway is designed to support learners from all walks of life, including working professionals, caregivers, seasonal workers, tribal members, veterans, and individuals balancing employment, family, or community responsibilities. Special Enrollment participants may join select training modules, workshops, or designated program weeks based on availability, seasonal programming, and learning goals.

    Participants who enroll through this pathway can earn credit toward their Certificate of Completion. While full-term participants typically complete certification within one continuous six-week session, Special Enrollment participants may accumulate required instructional hours and competencies over multiple terms. This flexible model allows individuals to progress at a pace that aligns with their life circumstances, without compromising educational rigor or learning outcomes.

    Full alumni status and leadership recognition are granted upon certificate completion.

    All Special Enrollment requests are reviewed individually to ensure alignment with program goals and operational capacity.

Participants engage in morning farm chores, technical agricultural training, applied project work, business and leadership workshops, and evening cultural or leadership sessions. Learning takes place across fields, barns, forests, processing areas, and community spaces — providing a fully immersive educational experience grounded in real agricultural operations.

  • The Agricultural Leadership Development (ALD) Program is completely FREE for all accepted participants.

    Thanks to the generous support of donors, partners, and grant funding, Sunrider Ranch is able to fully cover the cost of tuition, instruction, training materials, housing, and on-site programming. Our goal is to eliminate financial barriers and ensure that motivated individuals — regardless of economic background — can access high-quality agricultural and leadership education.

    Each program term is funded through a combination of philanthropic donations, public and private grants, and institutional partnerships. Because annual funding levels vary, every cohort looks slightly different, but our commitment to providing this experience at no cost to participants remains steadfast.

    Donations and sponsorships are always welcome and directly support participant scholarships, program operations, instructional materials, housing, meals, and transportation for off-site learning experiences. Every contribution helps us expand access, strengthen rural and Indigenous food systems, and invest in the next generation of agricultural leaders.
